Tips and guides to help you land your next role in South Africa

How to Write a CV That Stands Out in SA

South African recruiters spend seconds scanning your CV. Learn what to include, what to cut, and how to tailor your CV for local employers.

Your CV is your first impression. South African recruiters spend an average of 7–10 seconds scanning each application before deciding whether to read further. That means every line needs to earn its place.

What to include: Tailor your professional summary to each role. Lead with your most relevant experience. Use bullet points for achievements, not responsibilities. Quantify results wherever possible ("reduced costs by 15%", "managed a team of 8").

What to cut: Remove references, "available on request" (they know), hobbies unrelated to the role, and your primary school (yes, we still see this in SA). Keep it to 2 pages maximum, 1 if you're a graduate or have less than 5 years experience.

Formatting matters: Use a clean, ATS-friendly layout. Save as PDF unless the employer specifies otherwise. Review your contact details three times; a missing digit on your phone number costs you the interview.

Finally, get someone else to read it. Fresh eyes catch typos your brain skips over.

Ace Your Virtual Interview

Remote interviews are the new normal. From setup and lighting to handling tough questions, prepare like a pro.

Virtual interviews are here to stay. South African employers across all sectors have embraced the format, and candidates who prepare for the medium come across as more polished and professional.

Before the call: Test your camera, microphone, and internet connection. Position your camera at eye level. Propping your laptop on books works fine. Face a window or good light source; avoid backlight that turns you into a silhouette. Choose a neutral, uncluttered background or use a professional virtual background.

During the interview: Look at the camera, not the screen; it simulates eye contact. Mute notifications. Keep a glass of water nearby. Speak clearly and slightly slower than you think you need to; audio delay can make fast speech overlap.

Common questions to prepare: "Tell me about yourself" (60-second summary), "Why this role?" (research the company), "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" (ambitious but realistic). Have questions of your own ready; it shows genuine interest.

Follow up within 24 hours with a short thank-you email reiterating your enthusiasm.

Top Industries Hiring in SA Right Now

Finance, tech, healthcare, and engineering are leading hiring in South Africa. Discover which sectors have the most opportunities and how to break in.

Despite economic headwinds, several sectors in South Africa continue to hire aggressively. If you're job hunting, these industries offer the best opportunity-to-candidate ratios right now.

Finance: Accounting firms, banks, and fintech startups are competing for talent. Roles in compliance, risk analysis, and financial data science are particularly hot. CA(SA) qualification remains a golden ticket, but analytical and tech-adjacent finance skills open doors too.

Technology: Software development, cybersecurity, data engineering, and cloud architecture lead demand. Remote work has expanded the market. SA developers are hired by companies in Europe, the US, and Australia. Python, JavaScript, and cloud skills (AWS/Azure) are the most requested.

Healthcare: Nursing, pharmacy, radiography, and allied health professions are undersupplied. Private healthcare groups and international recruitment agencies are active in this space.

Engineering: Civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers are needed for infrastructure projects and renewable energy. The energy transition is creating demand in solar, wind, and battery storage sectors.

How to break in: Build a portfolio of work (even personal projects), network on LinkedIn, and consider certifications in your target field. Many employers value demonstrated competence over formal qualifications.
